Acid dyes are a class of water-soluble, anionic dyes characterized by the presence of sulfonic acid (-SO₃H) or carboxylic acid (-COOH) groups in their molecular structure. These groups enable the dye to form salts, impart excellent solubility in water, and create an affinity for positively charged sites on specific fibers.
